George R. Meyer, 93, of Plainview, died Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Mayo Clinic
Hospital-Rochester, St. Mary’s Campus.
George Richard Meyer was born on April 14, 1925 in St. Peter, MN to William and
Inez (Goldberg) Meyer. He went to Washington High School in St. Peter. In July of
1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. George was a Squad Leader in the Combat
Infantry and served in the Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes Campaigns.
He received the Distinguished Service Cross Medal, three Bronze Stars and
several other Decorations and Citations. He was discharged in June of 1945.
On September 21, 1946, he married Margaret Holan from Chicago, IL at St. Peter
Catholic Church in St. Peter, MN. The couple first lived in Winton, MN where he
started his career with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. In July
1948, he took a position at the Whitewater Wildlife Refuge where he was manager.
George helped establish the Richard Dorer Pools and Hardwood Forest and was
also involved with the establishment of the Wild Turkey population in southeast
Minnesota. George was instrumental in keeping the Monarch House from being
destroyed. He retired in 1983.
He was a Boy Scout and 4H leader. In 1984, the couple moved to Harrison,
Arkansas and then returned to Minnesota in 1992. His hobbies were fishing,
hunting and horseback riding. He lead many horse back rides including one with
Gov. Al Quie. He participated in the 2009 Honor Flight.
George is survived by his wife Margaret of Plainview; children, Joan Jensen of
Altura, James (Donna) Meyer of Florence, AZ, and Deborah (Bob) Scherbring of
Altura;  grandchildren, Mark (Sheri) Jensen, Chad Jensen, Shane (Jackie) Jensen,
Jamie Meyer, Jason (Jen) Meyer, Erin (John) Scholla; 17 great-grandchildren and
11 great great-grandchildren; one sister, Carol Peterson of St. Peter, MN; brother-
in-laws, Thomas (Irene) Holan of Winona and Richard Holan of Onalaska, WI and
many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Donald and Glen Meyer and
one grandson, Jeffrey Jensen.
Funeral Mass is Monday, July 30th, 10 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Elba
with Father Tim Biren officiating. Burial is at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation is Sunday, July 29th, 5-8 p.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church and one
hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
