Arthur “Art” Melvin was born December 14, 1932 in Plainview, MN to Frank and
Patricia (Lynch) Melvin. Art, one of five children, grew up on his family farm in
Plainview. He graduated from High School. Art worked for the Rochester Block
company in Rochester, MN living in the Rochester area for a time before moving back
to Plainview. Accepting this position at the Block Company in Rochester was one of
the few careers Art had away from the farm. He was a proud worker of the Union.
During this time Art was married to Carmena (Lee) and raised his 4 children. Duty
called Art back to the farming community with his brother. He purchased his own
home farm to begin a 50-year legacy in 1967. Shortly after this time, Art retired from
the Block Company to pursue his dream of farming full-time collaboratively alongside
his brother. His passion for the farm’s responsibilities, unwavering hard work, and
love for the area kept him here the remainder of his life.
Art worked his hardest every day. Often, he got up before the sun rose and made
sure he always got as much done as possible before the sun set. His passion for
horses led him to many gatherings with friends and family, but never allowing himself
too much time for breaks as there was always more work to be done back at home.
Art continued his work on the farm after raising his 4 children. He divorced during
this timeframe. His efforts for the farm never wavered. He worked the land and
raised cattle until the day of his death. Truly, Art did what he loved!
In his later years, he accepted a position with the Plainview Bus Company. Art loved
to work and stay busy. Loyal to his word – rain or shine, he would be on time to get
the kids to school and home again safely.
Retiring from outside jobs in 2012, Art focused his remaining efforts on his farm, A&J
Angus. His pride and joy was working hard and that kept him busy until the day of his
passing. Art’s family includes his wife, Judy (Hawkins) Melvin; children from his
previous marriage are: Mary Melvin (Harry Menk) of Plymouth, MN, James Melvin of
Mankato, MN, Becky (Wayne) Scherbring of Mantorville, MN and Lori (Mike)
Robertson of Rochester, MN. He has 2 step-children Brian Ronningen of Hudson,
WI, and Eric (Colleen) Ronningen of Rochester, MN. Eleven grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.: sisters and brothers: Patricia Hall of Byron, Jim (Kathy) Melvin
of Plainview, Joe (Liz) Melvin of Rochester and Rita Nelson of Rochester. Arthur was
preceded in death by his parents Frank and Patricia Melvin.
